It started at birth when a doctor left an indentation on Alan Felyk's forehead with his forceps. Yes, Damaged Right Out Of The Box . . .

It was the beginning of an ordinary life that was often blended with the improbable. The result is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes wistful personal experiences book that discusses survival despite asbestos, radioactive particles, talcum powder bombs, a butt-crack abscess, quadruple coronary bypass surgery, and women . . . not necessarily in that order of importance.

Jobs such as a groundskeeper, ditch digger, road crew member, waiter, surveyor, houseboy, and taxi driver provided a perfect background for his career in journalism. As a writer/editor, he left Walter Cronkite on hold, covered a vice presidential speech while stoned, and helped get Clive Cussler fired. He has found "love" on the floor of a grade-school coat closet, in the bushes of a college dormitory, and draped over a toilet seat. And somewhere among the distant stars his name could still be aboard an ill-fated spacecraft that may have sailed past Mars.

Don't leave hot coffee on the dashboard for this one-Felyk's book is a rapid stop-and-go ride that spans more than six decades of laughs, misadventures, and bittersweetness.

I must admit that for me this book caused me to laugh out loud. Probably best way to describe this book is "quirky." As a senior just a few years younger than the author, and living in Colorado, the book intrigued me from the start. This is an incredible first person memoir, starting with his own perspective of birth trauma, growing up in southern Colorado, college during the Vietnam era at CU Boulder, his life as a writer, the end of a twenty-year marraige on one page. For those who were college-aged late 1960s, you will genuinely identify with the angst of waiting for the ping pong balls unveiling draft numbers, that meant either "safe" or at risk for duty in Southeast Asia. His story is very self-effacing, and very entertaining. His reminiscences of childhood friendships, college/fraternity antics, make me think of American Graffitti.

Damaged Right Out Of The Box edition by Alan Felyk Mark E Stevens Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

The stories were so entertaining. Hard to believe that all of this happened to one guy! I never wanted to put the book down, the adventures were compelling and the story telling was fabulous!
This is a hilarious book about life in college, being in a fraternity, and work after college. I laughed out loud at the pranks described in the book. I knew Alan in college and can verify these stories are actually true. He was always the life of the party, and had a way of looking at things and describing events that left everyone laughing, and he does exactly that in this book. I could see this story becoming a great movie.
Alan Felyk has written a very humorous and yet deeply emotional book about his years in school and early working career. He structures it in anecdotal format and there are stories ranging in length from one paragraph to many pages. If there is one recurring theme it would be Alan's struggles with his romantic relationships and all the repercussions that ensue. Alan is a study in that old saying of hope triumphing over experience. Fun and entertaining and touching. Reading this book was a hoot.
A series of short vignettes about what really wasn't a very exciting life. He went to high school, went to college, went to work. Fell in love. Broke up. Pretty much the same things that happen to everyone.

His wit and writing style turn those stories into page-turning gems. I read it until I fell asleep last night and finished it today.

I really really liked it.
I'm a sucker for memoir--I readily admit it. The proviso, however, is that it must ring true, that it must further our understanding of "the human condition." As a general rule, if memoir doesn't make me squirm just a wee bit, I won't relate to it. Mr. Felyk shares intimate details of his life with total candor, and apparently without self-consciousness. That is a risky thing to do as a human being; it's the ultimate vulnerability. At heart, I believe that we're all voyeurs and peeping toms, just not in the the creepy sort of way. A great poet once said, "The proper study of mankind is man." Mr. Felyk serves himself up on a microscope slide as a subject to be freely examined. In the process, we learn about human nature, and we relate to his experience as fellow travelers. This is an honest book. It is a funny book. It is worth a read.
I bought this because the title sounded interesting. Flipping through the for something new, I decided to try this. I was in for a treat. Alan is from Colorado and I'm familiar with the places he talks about, since I lived in that area for 35 years. I went to CU myself, though a decade later than Felyk did, but the dorm names, The Hill, local points of interest mentioned with Alan's humor and penchant for getting himself into trouble make it all seem new again. Highly entertaining read, a travel back to recount misspent youth through the eyes of an adult who is now a lot wiser, and a lot funnier as well.
Laughter is good for the soul and I don't read nearly enough humor when I take that into account. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of author Alan Felyk's "Damaged Right Out of the Box" and it was not only a lot of laughs for me but also a nostalgic trip down memory lane in some spots. I have lived in his hometown for a short period of time so it was nice to revisit it. Aside from that, Alex has lived an interesting and adventurous life and I'm so glad that he ventured to share so many details with his readers. I loved re-visiting another time and place and found the story to be very well written and descriptive.
